How To Get Rid of Concrete, Dirt, Rocks, and old bricks

When it comes to landscaping projects, and any number of other outdoor projects, there can be one big problem. What to do about some of the resulting debris. If it’s simply branches and plants, then the solution is relatively simple. Bag them up and set them out for the city to pick up.

A dumpster is one way to dispose of concrete, rocks, and dirt

It’s what to do with some of the heavier debris that can be a problem. It could be old bricks or broken up concrete or rocks. It might even be dirt if you’re digging a hole.

If it’s a big project such as tearing up a driveway or sidewalk, you’ll have a lot to get rid of. Yet even a small amount can be a challenge to dispose of.

Start to toss this type of waste in a trash can and you’ll find out pretty fast that it doesn’t take much for the bin to be too heavy to lift.

Even if this material wasn’t so dense, it would still be difficult to get rid of. After all, you can’t just set out a bag of rocks for the city to pick up. Or a trash can full of dirt. Most cities won’t pick up these items. In fact, they seldom take any construction debris.

If you’re about to do some landscaping or work that will result in this type of debris, you might want to consider your options before you even begin the work. You don’t want your great-looking landscaping project detracted by the pile of debris near it.

Here are some things to consider when wanting to dispose of heavier materials such as rocks, concrete, and dirt.

Craigslist

You might get lucky and find that someone in your area is actively looking for dirt or concrete. Often, they’re willing to pick up the items for free in order to complete their own projects.

The problem with Craigslist is the person may already have all they need despite their ad still being up. Still it worth at least checking the site to see if you’ll get lucky.

Landscaping or Construction Companies

You might get fortunate and find that a local company is actively looking for concrete, rock or dirt. Concrete, for example, they might be breaking down and using it as a layer for a project. Most likely these companies can also take on larger amounts and have the trucks necessary to haul it away.

Go on Google and perform a search such as concrete disposal.

You might find that someone in your area is just now searching for dirt or rock for a project. Then it’s simply a matter of getting the word out that you have debris for removal.

It could be as simple as putting a sign in your front yard or placing an ad in ad on Craigslist. Again, you’re hoping that someone currently needs dirt, rock or concrete to fill in a hole or for a building project such as a retaining wall. Yet, how long do you want a pile of debris in your yard?

It would be nice if one of these free options might work, but chances are that you’ll have to find another way to get rid of your debris.

Take It to The Local Landfill

If you own or have access to a pickup truck, then you might consider hauling it to the local landfill. You just need to be careful loading up the vehicle.

As with a trash can, you might think you haven’t filled up the truck very much. Yet it won’t take long before the truck is weighed down by the debris. You don’t want to damage the struts or put too much strain on the engine resulting in repair bills that suddenly make your DIY project a lot more expensive.

Your best option is not to put too much weight on the truck and instead take more than one trip. This, however, results in more time being wasted and more landfill fees.

And all this is contingent on you having access to a landfill or one that will accept concrete. Residents of Washington DC, for example, don’t have a landfill they can use. And some landfills have restrictions on what types of material they’ll take.

Rent a Dumpster

If you’ve determined that you don’t have a way to get rid of your debris, then consider renting a dumpster. There are special dumpsters called construction dumpsters that are designed specifically for heavier materials.

There are a few advantages to renting a dumpster. For one it makes your job easier. As you tear up concrete or gather up dirt, then you simply toss it into a dumpster.

Once the dumpster is loaded, then the company you hired will haul it away.

When loading the dumpster, however, make sure you don’t go past the space provided for dirt and rock. The reason is that going past this will often result in the dumpster being overweight. As a result, you’ll see a higher fee. Or the dumpster company might determine the dumpster is too heavy to even take. Follow their guidelines when loading the dumpster.

Hire a Junk Removal Company or Dumpster Rental Company

Another option is to hire a company that will haul it away for you. Look for junk removal companies that list concrete removal as a service. Most likely they can also help with dirt and rock.

One advantage of hiring professionals is that you don’t have to do any heavy lifting. Simply show them where the debris is, and they’ll take it from there. They also have trucks that are designed to carry heavier loads.

If you’re doing a landscaping project on your own or putting in a new driveway or sidewalk, you can often save a lot of money. Yet, you don’t want to be left with debris that you can’t get rid of.

Doing a landscaping project can be a great way to add beauty or value to your home. The same with installing a new driveway or sidewalk. This work doesn’t have to turn into a major headache when you’re left with debris that’s hard to dispose of. There are ways to get rid of the resulting concrete, dirt or rock.

My experience with NOVA Dumpsters was excellent. Their customer service agent was very friendly and knowledgeable answering my questions. Their driver placed the dumpster EXACTLY where I wanted (like literally to the inch) in my driveway. It was an impressive show of expert driving skills. They were the best priced of three companies I called, and my rental was good for 10 days. Scheduling pick-up was a cinch. If I need another dumpster for a home improvement project, I'm calling NOVA dumpsters.
